5 MORE Things Daycare Providers Wish Parents Knew

A few years ago, I wrote 12 Things Daycare Providers Wish Parents Knew.  And now, I’m adding to that list, but I’ve asked for YOUR help!

I posted this question on the WTTZ Facebook page – What do YOU want your daycare parents to know?  And the responses are very insightful.

Here’s what you said:

Natalie says:

I get tired too. So if you get off work early, please come get your child early. Don’t wait for closing time. It helps me and, most importantly, your child gets SUPER excited to have extra time with mom and dad.

And Karry wants parents to know:

When I tell you about our day and I include poor choices your child has made its not an accusation or a reflection on your parenting. It’s sharing information, making sure that we are on the same page so our message is consistent. Please don’t get defensive, we’re working towards the same goal.

If you want to be social please arrive before your pick up time. As much as I would like to chat, by closing time I’m exhausted.

Emily added:

I work 60+ hours a week, my first daycare child arrives between 6AM-630AM and I only close 10 days out of the year! Please show a little appreciation and don’t complain when you have to pay for holidays, sick days, etc.

Jenny says:

Parents who always pay on time, always pick up on time, and occasionally show appreciation in some way are worth their weight in gold! Good parents make for happy, less stressed providers.

Golden Parents – the best kind!

And in the comment section of 12 Things, Nana Gail has this to say:

As long as you get onto the same page as the parents of the children that you are watching, things can run very smoothly…I am blessed to be involved with some of the nicest families…I have loved each child, that has been in my care, as if they were my own grandchildren…I am told weekly how appreciated I am by both moms and dads…this makes my heart sing thus it makes me love what I do…the children are great, they learn to know what they can do and what they can’t do…I would be lying if I said that this job was an easy one…although I am tired, by the end of the night, I actually cannot wait until the next day when I get to meet them at the door and welcome them back here to their “second home”

When it comes to caring for children, parents’ goals and the goals of daycare providers line up perfectly: to provide a safe, happy environment for children while they’re with us.  We really do have to work together and communicate well to provide the best possible experience for “our” kids!

Are you a daycare provider?  If so, what would you add to this list?
