Feed The Hungry Weekly Update

I have just been blown away by the support that I've received for our Feed The Hungry project!

As a quick recap, we are packing and shipping a box of non-perishable food items to a family living in Northern Canada through Helping Our Northern Neighbours.  Because of the ridiculously high cost of groceries, many families in remote communities find it very difficult to put food on the table everyday.  Parents often go without so that children can eat, and children often skip meals so that the food will last longer.

We have managed to raise $188 from generous Welcome To The Zoo readers and Facebook friends!  With that amount plus the money I've brought in from the ads here on this site, our first shipment (the groceries AND the shipping costs) should be entirely paid for!  Not only that, but we will be able to send a second box to the Food Bank in Iqaluit -- a hub for several remote communities.  A friend who will be traveling there has offered to take the box with her.  The baggage cost will be about $25, which is MUCH cheaper than shipping it, so it's a wonderful opportunity.

While we're still waiting to be matched with a family, I've assembled our box, and it's ready to go as soon as we have an address.

Here's a video of Pond Inlet, Nunavut, which gives a bit of a look at the town, the children and the scenery.

Beautiful, isn't it?  I loved the scene of the dad woodworking with his little one.

Still, it gives a great visual as to the remoteness of the surroundings, and an idea of how difficult it might be to get affordable food in.

The plan is to send a box of food to our assigned family about once a month.  If you're interested in helping out, any donations received will continue to be put toward future shipping costs.

Donations can be made by clicking below, or by email money transfer to meganelford@gmail.com.

  19. That's great news that you were able to raise enough funds to ship the food, as well as have an opportunity to send a box with your friend for a lower cost.
