Last Friday we took a day off from the usual routine and headed out on a mini road trip. Our destination was the Bird Kingdom in Niagara Falls, an amazing experience away from the tourist traps of Clifton Hill.
We've been there before and we knew the kids would love it. It's a place that hubby and I were able to enjoy just as much too!
The Bird Kingdom has much more than just birds. From the snakes, turtles, fish, and lizards in the Explorer Base Camp, to the bats, cock roaches, and spiders in the Night Jungle, there's a ton here for everyone to enjoy.
In the Small Bird Aviary, you can sit and listen to the birds sing to one another as they fly past, watch them building nests, and eating. This was one of my favourite areas. It's fascinating to hear the birds singing so loudly, and flying so close to you.
In the Night Jungle, our 7 year old loved playing in the Archaeology Dig area -- a sand-covered area with artifacts to find, and a tunnel to play in. I quickly bypassed the cockroaches, but I did watch the bats for a little while. The scenery in the Night Jungle is amazing, with temple ruins, a crashed plane, and a subtle night sky twinkling overhead.
But the show stopper is the Main Aviary. In this massive room, a ramp descends through a jungle paradise with tropical birds of all kinds, a 40 foot waterfall, and an area where you can feed nectar to Lorikeets. All of the birds fly freely around you and they do let you get quite close to them. It's an amazing experience.
The cost is pretty reasonable at $16.95 for adults and $11.95 for kids. They do have Toddler Wednesdays when toddlers get in free, and then up to 6 people with them get in for 50% off -- not too shabby! We spent about 2 hours looking around, feeding the lorikeets and getting way too many selfies!
Of course, once we were in Niagara Falls, we couldn't NOT visit the falls, so we headed there for a stroll. Be forewarned though, parking along the river is expensive! We paid $18 to park for about 45 minutes.
It was a great outing, and the kids loved it!

ReplyDeleteI don't have an answer to your specific question, but I went to a zoo in Canada before and saw polar bears swim up, close and personal. It was a magical, unforgettable moment.
