Video: How To Interview Families For Your Home Daycare

I’ve seen it so many times – daycare providers kicking themselves because they don’t know what to do with daycare parents that don’t pay, or who are always late, or whose children are having behavior issues that are just too much.

In today’s video, I discuss how to avoid all of that – by interviewing properly before the family even registers.  There are two important things to remember.  Watch below to find out what they are!

I LOVED THIS! You are so right we are interviewing them, even more so than they are. When that clicked for me, years ago, I actually changed my tour to an Orientation. I explain this when they are setting up an appointment, that I will be orienting them to my program and then sit down and talk about their specific needs. Parents seem to respond better than when I was just touring them around. I also have a lot of handouts that I give to them to take with them when they leave the orientation. All of the information about hours, menu, sick & illness policy, phone numbers, etc. is on these handouts. This helps in case they missed something I said and can be especially helpful with recall after they have toured a number of facilities.

That’s great!! I wish I would have seen this as a newbie in the daycare world. I was so eager to sign on clients I didn’t really “interview” like I should have. Once I had an opening and booked about 15 interviews I realized I needed a plan! 🙂 I also print out a check list with things to point out during the tour like first aid kit, locked doors if cleaners or medications are inside, our earthquake preparedness kit, etc.
