I am so excited to feature a fellow blogger on today’s edition of The Best Mom Ever!
I’d like to introduce you to Kristen, who blogs at ReadySetParenthood.com. Kristen, please tell us a bit about you and your family.
Our little family consists of myself, my husband Dave, and our 15-month-old son Patrick. Dave and I met online in 2009, and have been inseparable since our first date.
Our two dogs, Phoenix and Lee, are named after the coffee shop where we had our first date (Phoenix Coffee on Lee Rd.). Dave and I were married in 2010. We also have a cat named Fiona.
We have absolutely LOVED parenting so far! Patrick is such a character, and we love watching him grow and learn new things (although I wish it would slow down a bit!)
What’s your background and what do you do for a living?
I am a 31 year old blogger and high school math teacher. I come from a large family, where I am the oldest of 7 children! We are a unique family, and my youngest sibling is 8 (a 23 year difference)! I am a proud graduate of Ohio University (Go Bobcats!) where I received my bachelors degree in integrated mathematics. I earned my masters degree in organizational leadership in education from Cleveland State University in 2012.
I am getting ready to enter my 9th year of teaching, and am not ready for summer break to be over yet! Besides math, I also teach an AVID elective course. If you don’t know much about AVID, it is an AMAZING program that works with increasing achievement and academic success in students typically under-represented at 4-year colleges. I get to work with them on college-readiness skills, goal setting, and preparing them for the future. I love it!
What do you do in your down time?
My main hobby right now is blogging, but I also enjoy scrapbooking whenever I get a chance (which hasn’t been for a while!).
What do you and your family do for fun?
We LOVE living in Cleveland, and get out to enjoy all the city has to offer whenever we can. We love the museums and events that are always going on in the city. Some of our favorites are the Children’s Museum, The Cleveland Flea, and the Metroparks Zoo.
We also enjoy camping, swimming, and traveling. My family lives 3-hours away, so we try to visit as much as we can.
Describe a typical day in your home.
This summer, I have been home enjoying time with Patrick, so our days have been much more fun than a typical day when I am working.
We wake up and watch an episode of Daniel Tiger in bed while dad gets ready for work. After dad leaves, we start our day!
We usually try to head off to a playdate with our playgroup or storytime at the library. When we get home, Patrick will nap while mom tries to either get blogging or cleaning done.
When dad gets home we enjoy dinner and family time until it is bedtime. Sometimes we head out to visit Grandma and Papa!
Bedtime has been a struggle lately, and we have unintentionally fell into the habit of co-sleeping, but it has helped! Once Patrick is finally down, Dave and I enjoy catching up on our favorite show and enjoying a glass of wine.
What is the #1 thing you want Patrick to have learned by the time he becomes an adult?
The most important thing I want my son to learn before he is an adult is gratitude. I want him to be grateful for what he has, and understand that so many have so much less than him. I want him to understand the work that has gone into giving him what he has, and that he will learn to work just as hard to get what he wants.
I want him to be thankful for his family, good health, and the love that is all around him.
What advice would you give a new mom just starting out?
Join a playgroup!
I found one on meetup.com at the beginning of the summer, and it has been amazing. It has forced us to get out of the house more often, and allowed me to meet other moms. It has been great to have a group of moms that I can talk to who are also experiencing the same thing I am.
It is great for Patrick to socialize with other kids since he is out of daycare over the summer, and having other kids over to our house has taught him how to share his own things. I wish we had joined earlier!
Thank you so much for spending some time with us, Kristen, and allowing us to get to know you!
