The 30 Minute Declutter Challenge: Kitchen

What is it with stuff?  It just seems to pile up and even though you may *think* you’re keeping on top of it, there always seems to be more of it!

This morning I had one hour free, so I decided to take 30 minutes to declutter and pack up the things I no longer need or use in my kitchen.  Take a look at the video to see how it went:

My criteria for deciding what to get rid of were simple:

1. Have I used it in the last year?

2. Does it have sentimental value?

If both of those answers were “no”, then I packed it up, before I could even think twice about it!

I think those 30 minutes turned out to be very well used!

Do you find it difficult or easy to keep clutter under control?  How do you decide what to donate and what to keep?

I don’t have any issues throwing things away, but I swear to God as soon as I throw things away we end up with more stuff in the house.

  2. Liz Mays

This is my weakness! I tend to think that everything may serve a purpose at some point, so I keep it all. OR it means something to me, so I keep it. I have issues.

I hear you. I used to feel the same way about keeping things “just in case”. Then I read somewhere about assigning a dollar value to the cost of storage for those things. If it would be cheaper to buy another one *if* you ever need it again, then it should be given away. Chances are good that you’ll never actually need it again; -)

Wow, you make really good videos! Funny seeing you on the countertop. And, you accomplished so much in those 30 minutes. I would fail this challenge because I wouldn’t be able to ask myself a third question: ‘Will I ever need this in the future…’ Like this pretzel pan that I’ve been meaning to use and never got around to it…but I really want to make my own pretzels….etc

Thanks! I wasn’t too sure about puclicizing the fact that I climb on my counters (short girl problems, lol!), but I did remember to use a stool … usually I just jump up onto the counter :-).

I’m glad you added the sentimental value criteria. There are a couple of things in the house I’ll probably never use, but because they have sentimental value, they’re not going anywhere. 🙂

Where do you donate your items? Can you show your cupboards for organizing ideas? Thanks for sharing!

    • Megan Elford

Hi Tanya! I take things to several different places: Goodwill, Value Village, or the drop boxes here in town. It all depends on where I happen to be driving next.
I’m afraid my cupboards aren’t all that organized — the big advantage to getting rid of all this stuff is that my cupboards are now MUCH less full. I really tried to keep only the things we actually use, which turns out to be not that much ;-).

My husband is a clean freak. He always tell me that if we do not need these things, it is either we throw it or donate it. I picked to donate, that way I can help.
