Just for Fun

Moving Pictures

I’ve recently started adding video to some of my blog posts and also posting them on YouTube and Facebook.  I’ve done a few instructional videos for recipes, like these ones:

And I’ve also done some whiteboard animation videos to round out a few of my more popular blog posts:

I’ve even done the talking head video:

I love doing the hands-only, sped up videos, and I really enjoy doing the animated videos, but I can not stand doing the talking head videos.  I read somewhere that this is a pretty common trait of introverted vloggers.  When everyone else is filming themselves talking, introverts will do anything to avoid it!

I’m good with that, but here’s the thing: I’m quickly running out of ideas for videos.  Many of my blog posts aren’t really conducive to making into anything other than the written word, and I’m not about to go all Rick Mercer with my rants.

So here’s my question for you:

What are your favourite YouTube videos about?

And what do you prefer – long or short videos, talking head or instructional?

I think videos are the future of blogging. I recently signed up for Periscope. I was told by a few sponsors that they look for bloggers on there. Who knows, though?

    • Megan Elford

I just downloaded Periscope, but I’m not sure how I feel about it yet. I totally agree though, video really is the future of blogging!

  2. Christy Maurer

I prefer shorter, funny videos unless I’m really trying to learn to do something that I have no clue how to do! My son watches tons of music on youtube…older blues stuff…so he can learn to play the songs.

Vlogging is not for me, I am not good making videos. Talking on vids is not my cup of tea but I think that Vlogging is as lot entertaining.

Your videos are really great! I especially love the one on how to make home made hot pockets. Yum!

I’m not a big YouTube Person but they are my go to when I need to learn how to do something. I prefer shorter videos, when they get long I tune out.

I agree — I tend to lose interest after the first few minutes. But there are many successful videos that are much longer than that. I just wonder what their secret is, lol!

  6. Sandy KS

I prefer short videos that get straight to the point. I dislike watching videos that talk and repeat the same thing for the first few minutes before getting to the point.

Your videos look great! The recipes look so mouthwatering. I have had testing out youtube on my to-do list for years but it seems to intimidating to me compared to ‘regular’ blogging which i’m so comfortable with. 🙂

I’m so old-school. I had rather read a blog than watch a video any day unless it’s one of those fast ones like the cookie decorating ones. My daughter keeps telling me I should vlog, but I keep trying to avoid it. Sigh. I may just have to give in one of these days. Yours are great, btw!

I love the idea of adding videos to your blog posts especially for recipes and DIY because I am so bad at following directions. I also find I can follow through with the steps if I can actually see someone doing it. ♥

I love your vids! Makes me hungry 🙂 I totally prefer short videos with the actual examples on it. May I ask what software do you use to edit your videos?

    • Megan Elford

Sure! I use Windows Movie Maker for the live action ones, and VideoMakerFX for the animated ones :-). They’re both quite easy to use.

I don’t like to do head videos either. I appreciate the talent though for those who do like to make them.

I, like Alli like reading people’s blogs much better than checking out videos! it seems everyone and their grandmother are doing them and honestly, I have no patience to get to the end of most!

  18. Jaime Nicole

I haven’t done many videos to this point, but it looks like things are going that way. I think that more and more this may become the standard

Great videos! That hot pockets look great. I am not a fan of videos but I have been making some recently. As long as I don’t have to talk or be on camera I’m fine!

  20. Cherri Megasko

Most of the YouTube videos I watch are how-tos. Whenever I get a new idea of something I’d like to try, I go to YouTube to see how it’s done. This can even relate to cooking if it’s a technique. For instance … how to make puff pastry from scratch or how to tie a roast.

YouTube has been a source of entertainment for me since about 2007. I always tell my husband if I would have kept up with my videos back then I would be a YouTube super star! LOL. But, I never felt like my life was exciting enough. I used to love watching ShayCarl and his Shaytard family. But, these days hes just not funny. I think it got to be too much about production and such and a lot less spontaneous. I do watch Jenna Marbles from time to time. She still makes me laugh. I have a handful of others I have been faithful to over the years. I dont mind making videos. I tried doing some cooking vids but I cried when I saw them because I am just not comfortable with the way my body looks. I do head to YouTube from time to time for instructional videos, but usually watch silly stuff.

    • Megan Elford

I hear you – I’m not a fan of watching myself in videos either! I keep thinking I should film our everyday life too, like some of those YouTube superstars, but I’m afraid we’re not that interesting either! All of the funny stuff that happens is because the kids are riffing on something, but I don’t really want THEM to be all over the internet for safety reasons.

  27. R U S S

Videos are great visual and instructional tools as long as they’re straight to the point. I love videos and I see them as the next big blogging thing but I’ve seen A LOT of videos, mostly make-up vloggers and they take about 1-2 mins for their intro – would’ve been nicer if intros & stuff about themselves are given limited air time 🙂

I’m more of a short video person. I love instructionals because they’re more straight to the point and more animated if you ask me.

I’m starting to look a little more into doing videos. So much now is visual based so a video can quickly say what people are too impatient to read through.

I use a super simple set-up — my smartphone on a tripod, pointing down at the food (or whatever I’m filming) beside a window. Usually I have a piece of white foamboard standing facing the window to bounce the light back, but that’s it! No fancy, high-tech stuff here 🙂

I use VideoMakerFX to do the whiteboard animation. They have template slides, where you can only change things slightly. It’s perfect for people like me that don’t have the time or patience to learn Aftereffects, lol! You can also do character animation with it, and some other neat things too.
