Today is Canada Day!
Canada is 148 years old today. In recognition of such our nation’s birthday, I thought I’d share a quick how-to for making Maple Bacon Poutine! It’s an ooey gooey, super yummy comfort food that all Canadians are familiar with. Adding maple syrup and bacon makes it even more so!
Here’s what you’ll need:
– oven-baked french fries (although if you’re a purist, you’ll want them deep fried)
– 1.5 cups brown gravy (can be chicken, turkey or beef, depending on your preference)
– cooked bacon, chopped (unfortunately Canadian bacon just wouldn’t work well with this, so it’ll have to be plain old bacon strips)
– maple syrup (100%, no imitations!)
– cheese curds
Here’s what to do:
1. Throw the fries in the oven to bake and fry up the bacon (microwaved is great too).
2. Add 1 tbsp of maple syrup to the gravy. Heat it up if it’s canned (don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone).
3. When the fries are nice and crispy, transfer them to a serving dish and spread the cheese curds over them, followed by the bacon.
4. Pour the gravy over the entire thing. Drizzle with a little more maple syrup.
5. Let sit for 5-10 minutes. This allows the cheese to melt just enough.

I do have to warn you though – this dish is HIGH in calories so make sure you’re sharing it with the rest of your family ;-).
