A week or so ago, one family living in two residences lost everything to a fire. All of their belongings were burned in an instant. Not only that, the father was badly burned in the fire and is now in the hospital undergoing treatment.
This family lives in Kwadacha, British Columbia, which is also known as Fort Ware. Already struggling with food insecurity, this family now has nothing.
Enter Helping Our Northern Neighbours. When it’s founder, Jennifer Gwilliam, posted about this family on the Facebook page, I couldn’t help but get involved. And so I, along with you and the rest of the Welcome To The Zoo readers, are now co-sponsoring this family!
High food prices in Northern Canada make buying enough food to feed a family very challenging. Buying food here in Southern Ontario and shipping it to Kwadacha is actually cheaper than buying it there. I posted some price comparisons in this post and on this page.
Kwadacha is accessible by plane and by a logging road that requires passage heavy duty vehicles. The Prince George Citizen printed this article about the remoteness of Kwadacha.
Our family consists of several members, but we’ll be specifically sponsoring the Grandmother, the Father (who is in the hospital) and his 11 year old son. The family also includes a Mother and 2 more children.
There are several groups and individuals providing for our sponsored family in the way of clothing, household items and other things. We will be sending them a box of food once a month for a year. The first box has already been sent, and will arrive in a week or two. I’ve already got most of the food ready for our second box too, and I’ll be sending that out at the beginning of March. If you’d like to help with the cost of shipping, you can donate here.
Here are the fundraising numbers so far:
Food Costs for Shipment #1: $63.30
Shipping Costs: $113.24
Total Costs for Shipment #1 – $176.54
Remaining Balance: $11.46
Our second shipment will go out in 2 weeks at the beginning of March. The food is bought and ready to go ($68.15 worth).
Assuming the shipping costs will be about the same, I’ll need another $100 or so to cover it. That’s where you come in!
Would you consider donating $5 or $10 to help feed this family? You can donate cash by email money transfer to email@example.com or by Paypal or credit card by clicking the link below.[paypal-donation]
Every little bit helps! I know our sponsored family will appreciate the help that they get as they start over and deal with their father’s recovery.
