Keurig 2.0 vs. Hamilton Beach FlexBrew

This Christmas I asked for a Hamilton Beach FlexBrew Coffee Maker … and I wish I hadn’t.

I was so excited to get this coffee maker for one reason: its versatility.  It brews a 12 cup carafe with regular grounds, a single cup with regular grounds, and a single cup using Keurig K-Cups.  It was perfect for when I have a number of people over, and for when it’s just me drinking one cup.  I was so looking forward to showing it off during our annual New Year’s Eve bash.

Instead, I discovered that the FlexBrew has a serious technical issue going on.  The coffee it brews tastes like melted plastic.  I wish I were exaggerating, but I’m not.  It’s nasty.

I flushed the brewer through several times according the instructions, and the taste didn’t go away.  I looked it up online and found out that this wasn’t an isolated experience – many people have found the exact same thing when it comes to using the HB FlexBrew.  I could have used one of the many diy cleaning options that were “supposed to” get rid of the awful taste, but I couldn’t bring myself to go to that much trouble for a coffee maker that shouldn’t even have this issue.  So, I took it back.

Instead, I bought the Keurig 2.0 K200.  The difference is night and day.  I bought a Thermal Carafe separately, and had to buy a Soloclip so that I could use older k-cups with the K200, but it was very much worth it.  Take a look at my review in this video:

Here’s a comparison of the two machines:

Hamilton Beach FlexBrew

  • 12 cup carafe
  • single serving size using regular grounds
  • single serving size using k-cups
  • programmable timer with 2 hour auto shut-off
  • Pause and Serve on carafe side
  • coffee tastes like plastic

Keurig 2.0 K200

  • 4-5 cup carafe (not included)
  • single serving size using k-cups
  • using reusable k-cup, can use regular grounds (not included)
  • touch screen
  • 40 oz. reservoir
  • coffee tastes great

We had a blast using the Keurig for our New Year’s Eve Coffee Bar!  It made wonderful coffee, hot chocolate and even tea.

SO good to know. I wonder why the coffee tastes like plastic, but I will definitely keep that in mind should I ever have to replace my Keurig. Now it will be with another Keurig.

  2. OurFamilyWorld

I’ve been reading a lot of great things about the Keurig brand. I will definitely consider this when it’s time to buy a new coffee maker.

Sounds like an issue that the company needs to take care of, especially if they’ve already got all sorts of bad reviews on it online. I’m glad that you were able to switch it out and have some great tasting coffee though. This is something I will keep in mind when I buy a new coffee brewer.

I love that so much! It’s the best of both worlds. I love my Keurig, but sometimes I want to make more than one cup. Then I have to go to my OTHER coffee maker.

Yikes, that plastic taste is a huge red flag. I’ll definitely remember that if we ever need to replace our Keurig brewer.

I want one! And I want to be at that coffee bar.. chocolate syrup!! No really, I love the versatile of this maker!

I just got a Keurig for Christmas! I got is solely because my husband loves coffee and I don’t, so we never used the coffee pot. Also, my mother in law is obsessed with tea (I just like cold drinks) and always complains that we don’t have it, so this way she can make her own cup of tea and my husband can make his own cup of coffee!

It is so interesting that you mentioned the plastic taste because I know of someone who was experiencing the same thing. How strange. It is good to hear your Keurig worked out. We have one and love it!

Great comparison and thanks for the honest opinions. It’s hard these days to find something that compares to Keurig. I love my Keurig and dread the day I will need to upgrade or replace it.

Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to do it. I hate it when I’m all excited for something and then it disappoints.

We did have a bad experience with an appliance and it was a coffee maker too. If I remember it right, it think the timer won’t work so hubby had to return it. I would love to have a Keurig!

So good that you noticed and took it back. I would not have tried all the cleaning steps on a brand new machine either.

We have a Kuerig and my husband uses it everyday to make a Mocha.

I sometimes use it to make myself a hot chocolate but then I noticed some of the coffee grinds floating in my drink one day. So I ran quite a bit of water through with a Kcup in it to try to clean the machine.

It took a long time but the water finally ran through clean.

The only thing is, I do not have time to do that between his coffee and my hot chocolate, so I am back to just microwaving my hot water and adding my hot chocolate mix in that way.

I actually love Hamilton Beach products but I’m very skeptical of coffee machines. I prefer the old school, Italian-style stove-top coffee maker!

Never really had a bad experience yet and so sorry about yours. I’m sure it was really disappointing since you really wanted that specific one. I’ve been hearing good things about Keurig.

I have a 2.0 system and I love my Keurig, I can’t start my morning off without it. I’ve never had hamilton beach before but I’m not excited to switch from my baby blue keuirg anytime soon lol. Unless I’m upgrading lol.

I had a bad experience with my first Keurig as it died before a year of having it. I have an older model of it still and am too afraid to upgrade as I have heard some complaints from others about it. I don’t really buy the K-Cups from them either after hearing about how bad they are for the environment and we stick with recyclable cups.
