DIY Dried Fruit Christmas Centerpiece

driedfruit-headerDried fruit decorations at Christmas create a rustic, homey atmosphere, and what more could you want during the season of giving and spending time with family!

Dried fruit is easy enough to make, even with little ones helping.  And once you’ve dried the fruit, you can use it to create this centerpiece, a garland for your mantle or a wreath for your door.

I made mine with the fruit I had on hand: apples and oranges.  But there’s no reason why you couldn’t use pears, lemons, limes or cranberries too!

You’ll need to either dehydrate your fruit slices in a food dehydrator, or bake them like I did.  The instructions are below:

DIY Dried Fruit Christmas Centerpiece

DIY Dried Fruit Christmas Centerpiece

This is a beautiful and rustic centerpiece for your Christmas table that anyone can make!

Ingredients

  • 3 green apples
  • 2 oranges
  • 5 or 6 cinnamon sticks
  • yarn or twine
  • tape
  • candle

Instructions

  1. Slice apples and oranges thinly and evenly. Using a mandolin would work perfectly.
  2. Place slices on a parchment lined cookie sheet and bake at 250F for six hours, flipping every hour or so. Depending on your oven and the width of your slices, this could take more or less time. Use your best judgement.
  3. Turn off oven, leaving fruit inside. Prop open the oven door a crack.
  4. Take the fruit out of the oven when it has completely cooled.
  5. Wrap a piece of tape around the end of the yarn or twine so it doesn't fray, and then string the dried fruit slices onto the yarn or twine.
  6. Every so often, tie a cinnamon stick onto the yarn.
  7. At the end, tie the two loose ends of the yarn together to form a circle.
  8. Place a candle in the middle. Light and enjoy!

Place the centerpiece with candle on a small plate to protect the table from melting wax.
