Decadent Date Squares

I recently found this absolutely delicious recipe for “Gramma’s Date Squares“, and had to give it a try.  It’s a sweet square that you’ll want to enjoy a cup of tea or milk with.

I changed up the recipe a little, and my version is below.  I think the next time I try it, I’ll decrease the sugar by a quarter cup.  With the sweetness of the dates, I don’t think we’ll miss a bit of the sugar at all.

  • Crust: 1 1/2 cups quick-cooking oats
  • 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 3/4 c butter, softened
  • 3/4 pound pitted dates, chopped
  • Filling: 1 cup water
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar


  1. Crust: Combine oats, flour, salt, brown sugar, and baking soda in a mixing bowl.
  2. Cut in butter and mix til crumbly.
  3. Pour half of the mixture into an 8 or 9 inch pan and press into the bottom.
  4. Filling: Over medium heat, combine dates, water and brown sugar. Stir and cook until thickened, about 10 minutes.
  5. Spread filling over bottom crust. Sprinkle remaining crust mixture over the top.
  6. Bake at 350F for 25 minutes. Let cool completely before cutting into squares.
